There is a saying. "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

What we're trying to do at Canadian Newcomer Magazine is teach people how to fish.

Most newcomers to Canada are at least as well educated as any staff member at the magazine. Many of you are much better educated than we are. Many of you speak several languages - a talent we all admire enormously. So what, you may ask, can we teach you?

We can tell you what we know about these waters because we are very familiar with them. We are well established in this country and have wide networks of contacts. We know the kinds of "fish" that can be caught here and can tell you which lures and techniques you need to catch the "big fish".

It's true that we can't get you a job. But we can show you how and where to look for one. We can introduce you to organizations that can help you become better-employed, and we can give you tips on how to survive comfortably along the way. We can help you learn English. We can help you find your way around your new home. We can entertain you and encourage you.

There are people who think that the money it takes to keep this magazine going could be better spent elsewhere. But there also seems to be an increasing number of people who see the value in what we are doing. Thanks to them, we at Canadian Newcomer Magazine are celebrating our first anniversary.

Newcomers are getting more and more involved: writing stories to share your experiences with people who have just arrived; writing letters to tell us what we've done right and wrong; offering your services doing whatever you can to help make the magazine successful. Thanks to all of you, Canadian Newcomer Magazine has survived for one year and with your continued support, we plan to be around for many more.
