For almost four years, Canadian Newcomer Magazine has been providing settlement information to newcomers arriving in Ontario. We began with 10,000 copies going out to approximately 100 locations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Since many of these were being used in LINC and ESL classes and being kept as resource copies at settlement and employment agencies, we were reaching many more than 10,000 people, but still only a small percentage of the more than 200,000 immigrants coming to Canada each year.
By the second issue, we had come to an agreement with Settlement.org and they hosted our presence online. Our first six issues appeared in their entirety on Canada’s best website for new immigrants. This improved our reach, enhanced our reputation and introduced the magazine to readers outside the GTA.
We began getting distribution requests and inquiries from other urban centers in Ontario. Our circulation doubled and then doubled again. By 2006, Canadian Newcomer Magazine was reaching as many as half of the new immigrants arriving in Southern Ontario. At around that time, we created our own corporate website, independent from Settlement.org. For the first year, web searches for Canadian Newcomer Magazine continued to direct people to the Settlement.org site, but over time, the balance shifted.
The number of visitors to our website followed the same pattern as the readership of the magazine – doubling and redoubling several times in the last year alone. The www.cnmag.ca website now averages more than 300 visitors a day from around the world, so we’re reaching over 100,000 visitors per year outside of our central distribution area.
For this reason, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new updated website. Our site now features a search engine so you can search for stories by subject. The site is easier to navigate. It is easier to save, print and e-mail our articles. And we now feature a regularly updated announcement and events page that will keep you informed about what’s going on across Ontario.
And that’s not all. As of winter 2007, the magazine distribution is expanding to cover all of Ontario, with new distribution points being added in Ottawa, Kingston, Sudbury, Barrie, Thunder Bay and many other parts of Ontario.
